Keynote Title:
Computing Systems: From Green Electronics to Gray Matter
While the computing demands of Information Technology are ever increasing, the capabilities of electronics have hit fundamental walls due to energy and dimensional un-scalability. In this talk, I will demonstrate the quantum mechanical transistor, that I developed [Na-ture 2015], which beats the fundamental energy limitations. This device is the world’s thinnest channel (6 atoms thick) sub-thermal tun-nel-transistor. Thus, it has the potential to allow dimensional scalability to beyond Silicon scaling era and thereby to address the long-standing issue of simultaneous dimensional and power scalability. Going beyond electronic computation, I will discuss about the biologi-cal computer: the brain, which can be thought of as an ultimate example of low power computational system. I will introduce the tech-nology [Soc. Neuroscience 2016], which reveals for the first time, a nanoscale trans-synaptic architecture in brain and the way mother nature has engineered bimolecular organization in the brain to optimize its computing efficiency.
Short Bio:
Dr. Deblina Sarkar is a newly appointed faculty member at MIT and Director of the Nano-Cybernetic Biotrek research group at MIT Media Lab. She received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). She received with the prestigious Lancaster Award at UC Santa Barbara for the best PhD Dissertation. Moreover, her PhD dis-sertation was honored as one of the Top Three Dissertations throughout USA and Canada in the field of Mathematics, Physical sciences and all departments of Engineering, by the Council of Graduate Schools. Dr. Deblina Sarkar is the inventor of the world’s thinnest channel (six atoms thick) quantum-mechanical transistor, which overcomes fundamental thermal limitations, could lead to energy reduction by more than 75%, and allows dimensional scalability to beyond the silicon-scaling era. Her research also showed for the first time that employment of atomically thin flexible 2D-materials and quantum mechanical transistors can lead to low-power nanoelectronic biosensors with both extremely high sensitivity and the potential for single-molecular detectability—greatly beneficial for wearable/implantable biomedical devices and point-of-care applications. Dr. Deblina Sarkar’s research group at MIT is an adventurous scientific voyage, fusing engineering, applied physics, and biology to bridge the gap between nanotechnology and synthetic biology. The group’s two major research directions. First, to develop novel nanoelectronic computational devices employing ingenious device physics and smart nano-materials for achieving extreme energy effi-ciency and scalability. Second, to merge such next generation technologies with living-matter creating unique nanomachine-bio hybrid systems, with remote control and wireless communication abilities to achieve unprecedented possibilities for probing/sensing and mod-ulating (for therapeutics) our brain and body. Apart from low-power electronic computation, Sarkar is also passionately curious about biological computational systems—especially the brain—which can be thought of as an ultimate example of a low-power computer. Her recent research, as an MIT Translational Fellow and NIH K99 postdoctoral fellow, is focused on developing technologies for better un-derstanding the brain. She is the recipient of numerous other awards and recognitions, including U.S. Presidential Fellowship (2008), Outstanding Doctoral Candidate Fellowship (2008), one of three researchers worldwide to win the prestigious IEEE EDS PhD Fellowship Award (2011), Falling Walls Lab Young Innovator’s Award at San Diego (2015), “Materials Research Society’s Graduate Student Award” (2015), named a “Rising Star” in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (2015), Lancaster Award (2016), invited speaker at TEDx (2016), MIT Translational Fellowship (2017) and Technology Review’s one of the Top 10 Innovators Under 35 from India (2018). She has also re-ceived the prestigious NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award.

Terahertz Communications: From Nanomaterials to Ultra-broadband Networks
Abstract:
Wireless data traffic has grown exponentially in recent years due to a change in the way today’s society creates, shares and consumes information. This change has been accompanied by an increasing demand for higher speed wireless communications, anywhere, anytime. Following the current trend, wireless Terabit-per-second (Tbps) links are expected to become a reality within the next five years. In this context, Terahertz (THz)-band (0.1-10 THz) communication is envisioned as a key wireless technology of the next decade. The THz band will help overcome the spectrum scarcity problems and capacity limitations of current wireless networks, by providing an unprecedentedly large bandwidth. In addition, THz-band communication will enable a plethora of long-awaited applications, both at the nano-scale and at the macro-scale, ranging from wireless massive-core computing architectures and instantaneous data transfer among non-invasive nano-devices, to ultra-high-definition content streaming among mobile devices and wireless high-bandwidth secure communications. In this seminar, an in-depth view of THz-band communication networks will be provided. First, the state of the art and open challenges in the design and development of THz transceivers and antennas will be presented, with special emphasis on novel hybrid graphene/semiconductor plasmonic devices. Then, the current progress and future research directions in terms of channel modeling, physical and link layers design, will be tackled in a bottom-up approach, defining a roadmap for the development of this next frontier in wireless communication.
Short Bio:
Josep M. Jornet is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University at Buffalo (UB), The State University of New York. He received the B.S. in Telecommunication Engineering and the M.Sc. in Information and Communication Technologies from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain, in 2008. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), Atlanta, GA, in 2013. From September 2007 to December 2008, he was a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was the recipient of the Oscar P. Cleaver Award for outstanding graduate students in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at Georgia Tech in 2009. He also received the Broadband Wireless Networking Lab Researcher of the Year Award in 2010. In 2016, 2017 and 2018, he received the Distinguished TPC Member Award at the IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications (INFOCOM). In 2017, he received the IEEE Communications Society Young Professional Best Innovation Award, the ACM NanoCom Outstanding Milestone Award and the UB SEAS Early Career Researcher of the Year Award. In 2018, he received the UB Exceptional Scholar Award, Young Investigator Award, and the UB SEAS Early Career Teacher Award. In 2019, he received the NSF CAREER Award. His current research interests are in Terahertz-band communication networks, Wireless Nano-bio-sensing Networks, and the Internet of Nano-Things. In these areas, he has co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 1 book, and has also been granted 3 US patents. These works have been cited over 6,000 times (h-index of 35). Since July 2016, he is the Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier’s Nano Communication Networks Journal. He is a member of the IEEE, the ACM and the SPIE.

5G Evolution in UAE
Abstract
UAE is the 1st country in the middle east to adopt and deploy live 5G networks. Peak TP of ~ 1.3Gbps over 5G NSA at N78 band has been demonstrated by Q2 2019. Several smartphones and CPEs have been commercially launched for 1st time in middle east by June 2019. du has deployed fully cloud native vEPC data core. The same cloud native core has been smoothly evolved to 5G NSA and currently being evolved to 5G SA with seamless SW upgrade. Moreover, du has deployed massive MIMO LTE network at band N41 that has been evolved to 5G NSA & SA for triple play fixed wireless (with IPTV) service and mobile broadband service. du also has inaugurated UAE 5G Innovation gate (www.u5gig.ae) at early 2016 to support the development of 5G and its use cases in UAE.
The keynote will summarize the above practical 5G experience to the audience. A deployment strategy and roadmap for the above unique 5G network is illustrated including two layers of 5G NSA&SA at 3.5GHz and 2.6GHz bands with total BW of ~200MHz and converged cloud native core that serves 2/3/4/5G NSA &SA with microservices and containers to support e2e network slicing.
Short Bio:
Ayman Elnashar received the B.Sc. M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical communications engineering in 1995, 1999 and 2005, respectively. He has 22+ years of experience in telecoms industry. He was part of three major mobile/fixed operators in MENA region (Orange/Egypt, Mobily/KSA, and du/UAE) and held key leadership positions. Currently, he is VP & Head of Technology Planning – ICT & Cloud with the Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Co. “du”, UAE. He is the founder of the Terminal Innovation Lab and UAE 5G innovation Gate (www.u5gig.ae).
He is currently leading the transformation of du core network and cloud infrastructure towards SDN/NFV and native cloud 5G core network. Prior to this assignment, he was Sr. Director – Wireless Broadband, Terminals and IoT where he managed and directed the evolution, evaluation, and introduction of du broadband networks, terminals and IoT including LTE/LTE-A, HSPA+, WiFi and NB-IoT. Prior to this, he was with Mobily, Saudi Arabia, from June 2005 to Jan 2008 as Head of Projects. He played key role in contributing to the success of the mobile broadband network of Mobily/KSA. From March 2000 to June 2005, he was with orange Egypt where he was responsible for the mobile network operation.
He managed several large-scale networks, and mega projects with more than 1.5 billion USD budget including new networks (5G Network, LTE 1800 MHz, UMTS, HSPA+, and WiMAX16e), networks expansions (GSM, UMTS/HSPA+, WiFi, and transport/backhauling) and swap projects (GSM, UMTS, MW, and transport network) from major infrastructure vendors. He obtained his PhD degree in multiuser interference cancellation and smart antennas for cellular systems.
He published three books and 30+ papers in highly ranked journals and international conferences. His research interests include practical performance analysis of cellular systems, 4G/5G mobile networks planning, design, and optimization, digital signal processing for wireless communications, multiuser detection, smart antennas, MIMO/OFDM, robust adaptive detection and beamforming.

Machine Learning for Evolving 5G and IoT Applications
Abstract:
Machine learning (ML) algorithms, as a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI), have been providing effective solutions in engineering applications and to scientific problems for many decades. ML methods have the ability to adapt to new conditions and to detect and estimate patterns. Recently, ML has gained new and well-deserved attention in many fields of engineering and science mostly due to the development of high-performance graphical-processing units (GPU) as well as development of deep neural networks (DNN) based algorithms. Many leading technology companies are heavily investing in AI/ML and academia is following suit to develop more powerful algorithms that utilize the new hardware. In addition to these recent developments, practitioners have found new ways to utilize the many existing machine learning algorithms in their respective domains. The fields of electromagnetics (EM) and antennas also benefit in a variety of ways from the application of machine learning, deep learning (DL), and AI. In fact, several applications of ML to antenna design and propagation already exist. These, among others, are meta-learning, decision trees (DT), random forests (RF), support vector machines (SVM), nearest neighbors (NN), Gaussian processes (GP), artificial neural networks (ANN), ensemble learning methods, reinforcement learning (RL) and new deep learning-based approaches. Exploitation of these algorithms and hybridization with physics informed procedures will be key to enabling new technologies for antenna design and wave propagation modeling in the upcoming years. The aim of this tutorial is to highlight the potential for applying ML paradigm to evolving 5G and IoT application with emphasis to aspects related to antennas and propagation.

Raed Shubair is a Full Professor of Electrical Engineering. He is affiliated with MIT since 2015 a Visiting Scientist at the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE), MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA, USA. He is also affiliated with the University of Waterloo, Canada as a Visiting Professor at the Center of Intelligent Antennas and Radio Systems as well as at the Center of Bioengineering and Biotechnology. Beside his academic positions at MIT and Waterloo, he is serves since 2017 as a Senior Advisor and a Higher Education Expert in the Office of Undersecretary for Academic Affairs of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Prior to that, he has been a Full Professor of Electrical Engineering at Khalifa University (formerly Etisalat University College), UAE, which he joined in 1993 up to 2017. Prof. Raed Shubair received both his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering (with Distinction and Class Honors) from Kuwait University, Kuwait in June 1989 followed by his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering (with Distinction) from the University of Waterloo, Canada in February 1993. His PhD thesis received the University of Waterloo ‘Distinguished Doctorate Dissertation Award’. Prof. Raed Shubair has several research interests including Signal Processing for Wireless and Medical Applications. He has over 250 publications in the form of US patents, book chapters, journal articles in IEEE transactions, and papers in IEEE conference proceedings. Prof. Raed Shubair has been an invited speaker and gave technical talks at elite universities including in USA (MIT, Stanford, Harvard, UCLA, Ohio State, NYU, UCF), in Canada (Toronto, Waterloo, UBC, Carleton), and in UK (Imperial College London, and Queen Mary University of London). At his home university in UAE, Prof. Raed Shubair received, several times since 1993, both the ‘University Teaching Excellence Award’ and ‘University Distinguished Service Award’. He is also recipient of several international awards including the ‘Distinguished Service Award’ from ACES Society, USA and from MIT Electromagnetics Academy, USA. Prof. Raed Shubair organized, chaired, and delivered numerous technical special sessions and tutorials in IEEE flagship conferences. Prof. Raed Shubair is a standing member of the editorial boards of several inter-national journals and serves regularly on the steering, organizing, and technical committees of IEEE flagship conferences in Antennas, Communications, and Signal Processing including EuCAP2016, EuCAP2017, EuCAP2018, IEEE APS2017, IEEE APS2018, IEEE APS2019, IEEE, IEEE WCNC2018, IEEE ICASSP2018, IEEE GlobalSIP2018, IEEE APS2020, and IEEE ICASSP2020. He has served as the TPC Chair of IEEE MMS2016 and TPC Chair of IEEE GlobalSIP 2018 Symposium on 5G Satellite Networks. Prof. Raed Shubair holds several leading roles in the international professional engineering community including Member of the Executive Board for the European School of Antennas, Regional Director for the IEEE SP Society in the Middle East, and Chair of IEEE AP Society educational Initiatives Committee. He is Guest Editor of the IEEE Journal of Electromagnetics, RF, and Microwaves in Medicine and Biology. Prof. Raed Shubair is nominee for the ‘IEEE Distinguished Educator Award’. Prof. Raed Shubair has been nominated by the President of IEEE Signal Processing Society to be Candidate-Elect for the position ‘Regional Director-at-Large’ in IEEE Region 8.
